The incumbent in this position will be responsible for providing teaching, learning, research and community engagement in the Department within the Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University. Requirements:

Associate Professor

  • A doctoral degree in Public health or related field
  • At least five(5) years of public health postgraduate teaching.
  • Evidence of successful curriculum development and academic management.
  • Experience in managing research programs, postgraduate student supervision and scientific publications in public health.
  • Experience in development and reviewing of research proposals.
  • Excellent computer skills.
  • Experience in online teaching will be an advantage.

Senior Lecturer

  • A doctoral degree in Public health or related field
  • At least three(3) years of public health postgraduate teaching
  • Evidence of managing a research program, some publications in public health, academic management and curriculum development, as well as postgraduate research supervision.
  • Experience in development and reviewing of research proposals.
  • Excellent computer skills.
  • Experience in online teaching will be an advantage.

Lecturer

  • A master's degree in public health or related fields (a doctorate will be an advantage), with a focus in social and behavioural/ health promotion/ health behaviour.
  • At least two(2) experience in training and/or experience in social and behavioural/ health promotion/ health behaviour research.
  • Experience in development and reviewing of research proposals will be an advantage.
  • Excellent computer skills.
  • Experience in online teaching will be an advantage.

Key performance Areas

  • Initiate and conduct research on the social and behavioural/health promotion/ health behaviour aspects of public health
  • Develop and teach postgraduate courses
  • Supervise postgraduate research
  • Undertake departmental research and support inter-departmental collaboration in public health research.

SENIOR LECTURER/ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR/PROFESSOR AND HEAD OF DEPARTMENT (1 Post)

The purpose of the job of head of department is to provide academic leadership and organizational management to the department. The incumbent will report to the Director of the School. The incumbent will be appointed permanently on a substantive position as either a Senior Lecturer or an Associate Professor or Professor and a 3-year term appointment as an HOD. The incumbent must meet the requirements and be responsible for the key performance areas listed below:

Job Requirements:
  • A Ph.D in Nutrition/Dietetics or equivalent qualification and meet the requirements for Senior Lecturer/Associate Professorship/Professorship.
  • Five (5) years' experience in teaching and scholarly activities at a senior level.
  • Current Registration with HPCSA as a Dietician
  • Evidence of extensive supervision of post-graduate students at both Masters and Doctoral level
  • Evidence of extensive publication in peer-reviewed journals
  • Well estimated leader and manager of a higher education unit.
  • Proven understanding of collaborative, ethical, innovative and effective leadership style and a commitment to higher academic standards.

    • Ensure that personnel issues in the Department are managed fairly and equitably, including but not limited to, recruitment and selection of staff, annual staff performance assessment and staff discipline and grievances.
    • Establish mechanisms to ensure that health and safety policies are observed throughout the department, including activities (e.g. fieldwork) conducted outside University premises.
    • Ensure that the Code of Ethics and Conduct of the University is adhered to.
  • Financial and Infrastructure Management

    • Take responsibility for financial management of the Department, including establishment of budgets and planning departmental infrastructure needs including relevant equipment and monitoring expenditure patterns against allocations/budget.

  • PhD in Medical Microbiology or equivalent

  • Experience in developing research programmes; supervise postgraduate students and securing external funding.
  • Experience in Molecular Microbiology.
  • Experience in TB Research or Immunological techniques will be an added advantage.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills (both verbal and written).

  • Coordinate and teach theory and practical of Medical Microbiology to undergraduate students -MBChB, BDS, BSc (Diet) and Bcur.

INSTITUTIONAL PLANNER (1 Post)

The Institutional Planner is responsible for the coordination of management information for the purpose of producing the SMU three-year institutional "rolling plan". The incumbent is furthermore responsible for analysing and interpreting national and local priorities for human resource shortages in health and establish a linkage between SMU's delivery system of qualified students and regional and national health labour market needs in particular. This should lead to a best fit between the institution's Programme and Qualification mix and regional and national needs. The incumbent reports to the Deputy Vice Chancellor Academic and will furthermore meet the requirements and be responsible for the key performance areas listed below:

Minimum Requirements:
  • A Master's degree in a relevant field.
  • At least five years' experience in a strategic planning and research environment and with at least 3 years as strategic project leader.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of, and experience working with, higher education policies related to the social responsiveness role of higher education and academic planning.

SMU Open days 2015

Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (SMU) in Ga-Rankuwa, Pretoria will hold its inaugural annual Open Days, on 7 & 8 May 2015 at SMU Sports Complex from 08h00 to 15h00. Grades 10, 11 & 12 learners, life orientation teachers, principals, parents, Departments of Education & Health officials and other interested stakeholders are cordially invited and welcome to attend the event.

Open Day is a premier event of SMU, in which the University showcases its academic programme offerings and teaching capabilities to prospective students. Non-academic departments will also be available to share information on Student Affairs activities, Student Application Forms and Financial aid options that are offered at the University.

The attendees will also have opportunities to watch SMU senior students that are involved in various degree programmes, conducting hands-on demonstrations and answer questions about the courses that prospective students are interested in. Open Days provide attendees with a wonderful insight into what university life is like at SMU.

SKILLS CENTRE

DIRECTOR (Professor/ Associate Professor/ Senior Lecturer)

(5 year contract period)

Requirements:

This position requires excellent organizational and interpersonal skills

  • A Doctoral degree (or evidence of current PhD enrollment) and registration with the relevant statutory body (HPCSA as physician; SANC: South African Nursing Council etc.)
  • A recognized qualification in education
  • At least five years teaching experience in a tertiary educational environment.
  • Proven experience in the development and use of clinical skills facilities in health science disciplines.
  • Expertise and five years' experience in simulated clinical skills training.
  • Evidence of strong administrative/managerial skills
  • Evidence of academic leadership
  • Assistance with the development of scholarship, evaluation and research projects relating to healthcare education
  • Considerable number of publications in the field of Health Science Education
  • Postgraduate supervision would be an additional, but strong recommendation.
Personal attributes:
  • Excellent communication skills: verbal and written
  • A positive enthusiastic demeanour
  • Self-motivated and goal driven towards completing tasks
  • Ability to prioritize, plan and manage workload in order to meet deadlines
  • Ability to effectively work in collaboration with different teams and disciplines
Duties:
  • Strategic direction and development of the Skills Centre at the Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (SMU) to meet the need for undergraduate clinical skills education
  • Lead the integrated planning and delivery of the clinical skills training for undergraduate health science students
  • Lead the design of simulated work place learning environments
  • Provide leadership in the management and co-ordination of all activities in the Skills Centre
  • Develop, implement and monitor a quality management system and procedures
  • Represent the Skills Centre on academic and managerial committees
  • Collaborate with Health Science faculties on development of skills learning and teaching and inter-professional education
  • Lead the design and integrated programmes of inter-professional clinical skills training.
  • Implement new clinical skills teaching innovations

PRACTICE OF MEDICINE (POME)

FACILITATOR (SENIOR LECTURER) (2 posts)

(5 year contract period)

Practice of Medicine is the module in the Faculty's MBChB degree course which consists of problem based integrated teaching and learning as well as community-based service learning. It is involved in innovative curriculum design, development, implementation and review/evaluation and Faculty development in Health Sciences Education. It also encourages international collaboration and research regarding curriculum in Medical Schools and the implementation thereof.

Requirements:
  • MBChB or equivalent qualification.
  • Registration with the HPCSA for independent Practice.
  • Personal integrity, being able to work in various teams and the ability to keep information confidential.
Recommended Additional requirements
  • Computer literate (Word processing and Power Point presentations, internet & e-mail)
  • Degree/Diploma/Certificates in Health Sciences Education
  • Two or more years' experience in public service
  • Two or more years' teaching experience with students studying Health Sciences
Duties:
  • Teach and assess students in first, second, third, fourth and fifth years of the MBChB Practice of Medicine Integrated Programme. This can include, but is not limited to Family Medicine, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Paediatrics and Child Health, Surgery, Internal Medicine, Emergency & Trauma, Palliative Care and Epidemiology. Some teaching and assessing of students will take place in community Primary Health Care clinics and casualty departments of level 1 & 2 hospitals in North-West and Gauteng Provinces. Some service delivery responsibilities in clinical settings are also included in the job description.
  • The incumbent will have to evaluate clinical practical teaching and learning programmes and engage in research projects related to Medical and Health Sciences Education.

ANATOMICAL PATHOLOGY

COORDINATOR (Senior Lecturer) (1 post)

(5 year contract period)

  • Practical demonstrations with the aid of slides for MMed students on a weekly basis
  • To render assistance to MMed students with the preparation of research proposals integrating clinical practice with protocol developments
  • To do formative assessments of registrars for clinical, theoretical and slide practical on a monthly basis

Requirements:
  • A Code C1 driver's license
  • Pr DP (Passenger and/or goods and passengers)
  • 2 years driving experience
  • Public transportation experience is an added advantage
